We loved our experience with Tilly! The process is so easy. Our new yard has completely changed the way we entertain and use our home. My only regret is not having renovated our yard years ago.

Being a city that revolves around the outdoors and activities, we find many yard dwellers requesting hot tubs incorporated into their backyard landscape designs. A hot tub is a great addition to a yard and can be used by all members of the family all year round.

Backyard outdoor kitchen spaces are frequently requested to maximize family time outside. From a basic kitchen to a space with all the bells and whistles, Tilly thinks about how to maximize backyard kitchens by placing a pergola or awning overhead to protect from the elements.

Our Austin clients are focused on sustainability and want to cut down on grass while creating more outdoor living space through a patio or deck. A deck or patio can make your outdoor space a natural extension of your home, encouraging you to use it more than ever.

Popular Plants in Austin

Your landscape designer will have a deep understanding of what plants work in the Austin area. Tilly encourages homeowner's to focus on native plants that create a sustainable design. Some of our favorite Austin options include:

Texas sacahuista (Nolina texana)

A great accent plant for a native Texas garden. The grass-like form adds a beautiful texture for a spring garden and can continue with structure into the winter months. The cluster of creamy white blooms make this a great option for a pollinator garden.

Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora)

Another Texas native favorite. This member of the grass family has a beautiful arching form with large spikes of bright red blooms. As a great drought tolerant choice, Red Yucca can be used as an accent plant and works equally well planted en masse.

Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis)

This multi-stemmed large shrub / ornamental tree has a beautiful structural form that is a great focal point for a native Texas landscape. A wonderful, low-maintenance addition to both native and pollinator gardens.

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)

The blue-green foliage of this native ornamental grass transforms into a gorgeous bronze color in the fall to add seasonal interest. Quite drought tolerant once it’s established, Little Bluestem can be used to accent native perennials, as well as grouped together for a dramatic effect.

Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris)

A breathtaking addition to a native Texas garden, this large ornamental grass boasts delicate pink blooms that give a cloud-like effect. A great drought tolerant choice that also benefits a pollinator garden.

Blue Salvia (Salvia farinacea)

A versatile, hard-working perennial for native and drought tolerant gardens. Spikes of deep purple blooms provide food for pollinators and add a beautiful accent to a native perennial border.

What are popular landscape design trends in Austin?

We see a variety of design trends throughout Austin and its various neighborhoods. From southwestern, modern and naturalistic - Austin has diverse landscape styles depending on the homes’ architectural style and owner’s preferences. One design element that never goes out of style is incorporating sustainable landscape design practices into a yard!

What are Tilly's sustainable landscape design practices in Austin?

Native plants and water conservation are always top of mind for Austin landscape designs. Tilly encourages using only native plants, which help our eco-system by being primed for the existing environment's conditions and being a wildlife refuge for birds, bees, butterflies and other essential insects. Water wise plant selections are also key to a successful landscape design no matter where you are.

Tilly also encourages eco-friendly gardening practices. By this we mean using organic materials, no pesticides, not overmowing your lawn, etc.

We feel strongly that incorporating the above sustainable practices help a yard thrive and flourish and keep maintenance lower.
