Popular Plants in Dallas

Your landscape designer will have a deep understanding of what plants work in the Dallas area. Tilly encourages homeowner’s to focus on native plants that create a sustainable design. Some of our favorite Dallas options include:

Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)

This southern native is extremely tough and can tolerate a variety of soil types, from swampy to dry. This is a great deciduous canopy tree that provides shade in the spring and summer with leaflets that turn a beautiful rust color in the fall.

Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus)

A hard working ornamental tree, the Vitex provides both structure and color to a landscape design plan. With blooms very similar to a Lilac, the vitex is a great option for adding pollinator friendly plants to a colorful garden.

Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis)

Categorized as both a large shrub and a small ornamental tree, the Desert Willow boasts delicate pink to purple blooms. The branching pattern often twists and turns to create a beautiful structure, even in the colder months.

Dwarf Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria ‘nana’)

This highly versatile shrub provides evergreen structure to the garden and pops of color with red winter berries. The natural growth pattern stays compact and tidy, making it a very low-maintenance addition to the landscape.

Frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora)

Frogfruit is a very low maintenance (and evergreen in mild temperatures) ground cover that is a great option for pollinator gardens. The tiny white blooms sprinkled in the green foliage make this a good option for rock gardens or drought tolerant landscapes.

Turk‘s Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii)

Adapting to many different sun and soil conditions, Turk’s Cap is a hard-working perennial with a long blooming season. Both the flowers and the fruit make this a great plant to include to attract wildlife and pollinators to the garden.

What are popular landscape design trends in Dallas?

We see a variety of landscape design trends throughout Dallas and its various neighborhoods. From classic, modern and naturalistic - Dallas has diverse landscape styles depending on the homes’ architectural style and owner’s preferences. One design element that never goes out of style is incorporating sustainable landscape design practices into a yard!

What are Tilly’s sustainable landscape design practices in Dallas?

Native plants and water conservation are always top of mind for Dallas landscape designs. Through Tilly’s affiliation with the National Wildlife FederationTM, we encourage the use of native plants, which help our ecosystem by being primed for the existing environment’s conditions and being a wildlife refuge for birds, bees, butterflies and other essential insects. Water wise plant selections are key to a successful landscape design whether you are in Dallas, New York or California. Drought tolerant and native plant material are going to be more successful in naturalizing to the ever-increasing temperatures and dry conditions that have become commonplace and are the best way to ensure that your garden remains low maintenance.
