Popular Amenities on the Long Island
Here are some of the most commonly requested features for Long Island backyards
Long Islanders are prepared for any weather, but truly embrace the seasons. A backyard fire pit is a feature that can be used all year whether its s'mores in the summer or entertaining in the winter. We love a great built in fire pit on the patio or a portable fire pit on the lawn.
Being near the city that never sleeps, homeowners want to make their yards a place of relaxation. A hot tub is a great addition to a yard and can be used by all members of the family. Tilly helps homeowners design ensure their hot tub seamlessly fits into the yard design.
Backyard outdoor kitchens are popular to maximize family time outside. From a basic grill area to a kitchen with all the bells and whistles, Tilly loves designing an outdoor kitchen into a small or large backyard - add an awning or pergola to maximize the comfort of the space and provide shade!
Deck or Patio
A deck or patio can make your outdoor space a natural extension of your home, encouraging you to use the backyard more than ever. Whether it's a wood deck or a blue stone patio - Tilly will help you find the right deck or patio option to fit your backyard design and garden style.
Popular Plants on Long Island
Your landscape designer will have a deep understanding of what plants work on Long Island. Tilly encourages homeowner's to focus on native plants that create a sustainable design. Some of our favorite Long Island plant options include:
Endless Summer Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)
This is a wonderful new version of an old favorite and it offers a longer blooming season with full heads of color ranging from gorgeous pink to baby doll blue depending on the soils.
Catmint 'Walker's Low' (Nepeta x faasseni)
This silvery foliage has beautiful light purple blooms in early summer. It can be cut back once it's done flowering and will bloom again and again, making it a great option for your garden.
Knockout Roses (Rosa 'Knockout')
This dependable shrub rose is resistant to most diseases and flowers from midsummer through to first frost. They can be a deep pink, almost red or a variety of other colors are available.
Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Palace Purple')
This plant is grown primarily for leaf color and texture. It's a durable perennial that will take a wide range of light conditions and soils. It has a fun small while flower spike in midsummer.
Green Giant Arborvitae (Thuja plicata 'Green Giant')
This is the workhorse of screening plants that grows quickly and can form a dense hedge. Individually these trees can have a beautiful pyramidal habit and grow to great heights.
Limelight Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight')
This shrub is a late season showstopper with large white flower heads that fade to limey green as the weather cools. It's tolerant of many soil and light conditions and can put on size quickly.
Still Have Questions?Give Us A Call
We see a variety of landscape design trends throughout Long Island. From modern, naturalistic, cottage gardens - Nassau and Suffolk counties have diverse landscape styles depending on the homes' architectural style and owner's preferences. One design element that never goes out of style is incorporating sustainable landscape design practices into a yard!
Native plants and maximizing a yard are always top of mind for Long Island landscape designs. Tilly encourages using native plants, which help our ecosystem by being primed for the existing environment's conditions and being a wildlife refuge for birds, bees, butterflies and other essential insects. Water wise plant selections are also key to a successful landscape design no matter where you are.
Tilly also recommends eco-friendly gardening practices. By this we mean using organic materials, no pesticides, not over mowing your lawn, etc. We feel strongly that incorporating the above sustainable practices help a yard thrive and flourish and keep maintenance lower.
Tilly has landscape designers across the country. Homeowners are matched with a landscape designer who has residential Long Island experience and is familiar with the climate of the area. Each assigned designer understands what plants and material will work in a specific geographical location. You will have an opportunity to share your goals and show your space during your one-on-one video call with your designer.
After you have finished your design, Tilly will send you an estimate for the plants in your landscape design plan. If you choose to move forward with Tilly for plant delivery we will then schedule a curbside delivery at a date and time of your choosing.
