Popular Plants in Los Angeles

Your landscape designer will have a deep understanding of what plants work in the Los Angeles area. Tilly encourages homeowner's to focus on native plants that create a sustainable design. Some of our favorite LA options include:

Bush Anemone (Carpenteria californica)

This versatile shrub provides a beautiful backdrop for blooming perennials, can be planted en masse or utilized as a specimen focal point in the garden. Resistant to deer and drought tolerant, this shady shrub remains evergreen and provides late spring blooms.

California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum)

An evergreen shrub that enjoys full sun and attracts pollinators, this drought tolerant plant blooms with pink and white blossoms from late spring to fall. California buckwheat is a good pick for waterwise gardens.

California lilac (Ceanothus)

Being both drought and salt tolerant provides some adaptability for this low maintenance shrub. Boasting beautiful blooms and deep green foliage, California Lilac is an excellent addition to a native landscape.

California Blue Sage (Salvia clevelandii)

A drought tolerant shrub that performs well in full to partial sun, this pollinator friendly plant carries fragrant purple blooms that contrast with the gray-green foliage. California Blue Sage works well in a xeriscape design as well as a native rock garden.

Lemonade Berry (Rhus integrifolia)

This California native works well in dry areas and can be considered fire resistant if watered regularly through the hotter months. An evergreen shrub / small tree with aromatic blooms, Lemonade Berry can also provide a food source for wildlife.

Purple Needle Grass (Stipa pulchra)

This perennial grass does well in full sun and is extremely adaptable to drought conditions. The long green leaves provide movement in the landscape and pair well with other native grasses, as well as blooming perennials and wildflowers.

What are popular landscape design trends in Los Angeles?

We see a variety of design trends throughout Los Angeles and its various neighborhoods. From classic, modern and naturalistic - Los Angeles has diverse landscape styles depending on the homes' architectural style and owner's preferences. One design element that never goes out of style is incorporating sustainable landscape design practices into a yard!

What are Tilly's sustainable landscape design practices in Los Angeles?

Native plants and water conservation are always top of mind for LA landscape designs. Tilly encourages using native plants, which help our ecosystem by being primed for the existing environment’s conditions and being a wildlife refuge for birds, bees, butterflies and other essential insects. Water wise plant selections are key to a successful landscape design whether you are in LA, New York or Arizona. Drought tolerant and native plant material are going to be more successful in naturalizing to the ever-increasing temperatures and dry conditions that have become commonplace and are the best way to ensure that your garden remains low maintenance.

Fire wise landscapes are also important in the LA area. Clearing brush and dead wood is imperative to wildfire mitigation. Creating natural drainage swales and pockets that can provide site water retention will safeguard against the landscape becoming too dry.

Tilly also encourages eco-friendly gardening practices. By this we mean using organic materials, no pesticides, not over mowing your lawn, etc. We feel strongly that incorporating the above sustainable practices help a yard thrive and flourish and keep maintenance lower.

Who will be my landscape designer for my Los Angeles project?

Tilly has landscape designers across the country. Homeowners are matched with a designer who has residential LA experience and is familiar with the unique climate LA offers. Each assigned designer understands what plants and material will work in a specific geographical location. You will have an opportunity to share your goals and show your space during your one-on-one video call with your designer.

What comes after the design process?

Tilly will send you an estimate for your plants when you have finalized your design. If you choose to move forward with Tilly for plant delivery we will then schedule your delivery at a date and time of your choosing.
