You’ve received your Tilly package and are ready to dig in - cheesy plant pun for the win! Our team has broken down how to evaluate if this is a landscape design installation project you can DIY or if you should outsource help. If you are going to hire help, below are some guildelines on how to go about the process.

Alright, let’s get those plants in the ground! You have your planting plan, now....

Decide Who is Doing the Landscape Work

Who will complete the yard installation work, from sourcing and delivering your plant materials to laying walkways, building fences and digging in the dirt. Will you DIY? Outsource specific parts? Or hire a landscape contractor to manage it all for you - this is what you need to figure out when you look at your design plan. Once you have decided you can begin your next steps.

Plan Timing & Details

Determine the best timing for your design installation based on your climate and geography. Your local planting season will depend on where you live. You can google this information or ask your Tilly designer. Think about the amount of work required, your free time, budget and your personal schedule - is there a party or event coming up that can serve as a deadline? Remember that contracts and other specialists (masons, builders, etc.) can book far in advance.

Interview Landscape Partners

If you are planning to hire a contractor or any outside help, interview them ahead of time to make sure you mesh. If you aren't sure about partners, you can ask Tilly if we have any recommendations in your area. Other great resources including asking neighbors, go on Nextdoor, your local Facebook group. When you speak with them be sure to ask about their experience in residential landscapes, years of experience, experience in your area, ask to see some landscaping projects, etc.

As with anything it’s always best to get multiple estimates - not only for pricing, but for a variety of factors. For example, make sure installation schedules align and they can make your deadlines, are they familar with the work you need to have done, do they have eco-friendly practices?

Evaluate Landscape Estimates

Share your complete design package with potential partners and request an estimate for the project so you have solid comparisons and can feel good moving forward. Tilly also offers installation support services that will help you evaluate bids, value engineer and be the homeowner's advocate helping you step by step during the process. Hire Your Landscape Partners

Once you have selected your partners, hire them and lock in a date asap. In many regions the planting season is relatively short, so don’t wait to get something scheduled. Contractors and landscapers can book up early and quickly so get on their calendar!
